Hi spitfuzy, steel wool should be fine but WD-40 is generally not considered a good alternative to oil. My personal recommendation is gun oil or sewing machine oil, especially if budget is an issue. They come in small affordable tubes.

I’m trying to remove rust and clean a carbon steel blade, I’m very limited with resources, but I was wondering if WD-40 will work for oil and steel wool for scrubbing rust off?

Hi Spencer,

We suggest a small amount of mineral oil. If your fingerprints in the oil, it is an indication that you put too much. It should really be an almost imperceptible layer, just to create a protective “layer”.

Hi Jason,
we do not have a video guide for oiling the blade. I would recommend using mineral oil, gun oil, or any type of light oil. Place a very small amount on the blade and spread with a clean cloth. As a guide, if you can see or feel the oil, you have placed too much of it. It should really be minimal. Think of it as a barrier against oxygen.

For sword maintenance I’ve started using Japanese Camellia oil sold at Woodcraft. It’s used by the Japanese to maintain their high quality woodworking tools and swords so I tried it out on my Einar sword and my Ranger sword. Seems to work well

In reply to Jeremiah L Smith. hahaha, i know, i know. My comment was written quite some time ago, I think it was the Auto-correct issue. Yes, WD stands for water disperser and not water dispenser. Hence the use by locksmiths when locks get frozen during the winter months.

Normally, the 4 to six inches of the blade from the point were sharpened to a strong degree while the remainder of the blade is sharpened to inflict damage in a slash or strike. this allowed for the use of the tip to cut and Pearce the enemy, but the remaining portion of the blade can parry another weapon with reduced edge damage and still hurt the opponent.

Striking steel on steel will ruin a blade sooner or later. Its a toss up as to how long the edge will hold up, until most of is gone. The Spanish broadsword was said to be unbreakable, along with the Japanese katana. Depends on the steel used, and how hard its used.

You absolutely parry with the edge. Never ever spar with sharp swords. That shouldn’t have to be said. These things are made to kill and their techniques are effective and very deadly. Do not spar with sharps. But with that said, you actually parry with the edge far more often in Historical European Martial Arts than you parry with the flat. It’s in manuscripts used to teach the knightly class how to fight correctly in period. We study these techniques and know that edge on edge parrys are quite useful for many reasons. If my opponent throws a right side oberhau I can do an active parry into ochs guard where I put my weight into a swing toward their cut so that the blades cut into eachother just a bit. When this happens I can now feel what my opponent is going to do before they do it. Now I can choose to disengage the bind while still controlling the blade and glide past into a thrust or I could rotate off line and go for a oberhau or zwerchau. The options are always endless. Idk what school teaches students not to parry with the edge but they clearly aren’t studied in the arts in my opinion otherwise they would have heard of fühlin. Not to mention the fact that flat parry is far weaker than edge parrying because of basic human structure. To be clear my school is Blood and Iron and I am rather new to the school having only about 5 months of practice so far. I own a sharp and know how to keep it and was interested how good this guide would be and come to find out theres a great big glaring “no edge parrying” eye sore I had to sort out. Sorry guys. Hi,
To clean the blades you can use any metal polisher such as AutoSol or Silvo. To protect the blades, use a light based oil such as 123 Stop. We do not recommend using WD40 as many collectors do, as WD is not an oil but a “Water Dispenser – WD” (pushes water away) but does not protect against humidity and dampness.

You have nothing to worry about. The issue was only for three months (until the assembler was let go) and was for very few models. The Monarch was not part of the swords affected. The monarch is a Darksword design, but is actually part of our Herald series, which is manufactured in India. Nous avons des plans pour une nouvelle rapière pour le début de 2020. Nous terminons présentement la garde. Ce sera une rapière italienne par contre, 17e siècle. Au niveau des épées écossaises, nous n’avons pas de plans pour le moment. Peut-être après 2020.

I ordered my first sword from DSA early December of 2018, a little leery after reading some of the negative reviews and comments floating around, but, after being truly impressed by the quality of their products, I’ve since ordered two more swords and am planning on a fourth in the near future. All told, that’s well over 1k of my hard earned money, and I’m pretty confident that DSA is the only manufacturer that I’ll be doing business with when it comes to making beautifully crafted, battle-ready blades.
On a separate note, I recently spoke to Michael Embers on the phone after inquiring after a particular sword, and he informed me that they are in the process of updating their entire line of swords to improve their edge geometry to allow them to take and hold a better edge. To me, this is the mark of a company that is continuously learning and growing, driving their innovation on the feedback of their customers. You can’t ask for more than that.

3. Always remember that a sword is not a baseball bat. With a bat, the wrists and hands rotate through the swing. A sword, by contrast, in order to cut properly, must be not be turned while cutting through a target; the motion is more akin to swinging an ax; allowing the hands to rotate and the head to twist means an inelegant and ineffective chop. Or to put it another way, the rear edge should remain in the same linear plane as the leading edge during the cut.

Hi, I have two of your swords, the 14th century ‘dagess’ style sword and the glamdring. My 14th c swords pommel and guard are shined and bright always, but the glamdring swords guard and pommel turn a dull blue after only about a month and then need to be repolished. Is there some other treatment I should be using for this swords fittings? I cut with them occasionally, but they mostly are beautiful wall hangers.

I’m not certain I am understanding the preferred methods. Does it go something like this –
1) Routine cleaning (every 6 months) and light rust should be done by oiling and/or using Nev-R-Dull.
2) For middling to worse rusting I use the technique shown in the video.

This is one of the most beautiful designs I’ve ever seen. I absolutely love it. It borrows elements from nearly all of my favorite fantasy swords and yet has its own unique profile. This is something special. Can not wait to see the final product.

Hi Marlin,

while the scabbard requires very little maintenance. If desired, the leather can be cleaned every 12 months or so. We recommend using Dr. Jackson’s “Hide Rejuvenator”. This will give “life” back to the leather.

Glad the Glamdring is on this list, though I think I might have included more than just one sword from Game of Thrones myself. There’s a lot of really cool, iconic swords in that.

We do make our rendition of the Glamdring sword. It is called the Sage. We didn’t want to make a copy outright, but rather use it as an inspirational piece to create our own version. We have kept the leaf shape blade and curved guard as the original, but decided to modify the pommel.
