Philip IV, king of France from 1285 until 1314. He was also called Philip the Fair and the Iron King. Philip, who sought an uncontested monarchy, was instrumental in the transformation of France from a feudal country to a centralized state. During his war against feudal lords, Philip engaged in a dispute with his own vassals, including Edward I of England (also known as Edward Longshanks). On Friday 13th 1307, Philip IV strengthened his supremacy and annihilated the order of the Knights Templar, who he perceived as “a state within a state”.
